NACHRICHTEN
Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs Minister, Dr. Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis will chair the afternoon session of the last General Affairs Council (GAC) meeting during the Cyprus Presidency, which will take place tomorrow, December 11, in Brussels, and will focus on enlargement issues.
Ministers will discuss the issues of EU enlargement and the Stabilisation and Association Process, while they will adopt Conclusions stating the Council’s position vis-à-vis the Commission Communication of October 10 on the Enlargement Strategy and Main Challenges, and the Progress Reports on candidate countries and potential candidates.
The Council is expected to reaffirm the EU’s commitment to take the enlargement process forward on the basis of agreed principles, in line with the renewed consensus on enlargement approved by the European Council in December 2006 and the Council Conclusions of December 2011, with each country being assessed on its own merits.
With respect to the Western Balkans, the Council is expected to reaffirm its commitment to their European perspective, with the aim of promoting stability, peace and the rule of law in the region and the continent. By making progress in economic and political reforms and fulfilling the necessary conditions and requirements, the Western Balkans candidate countries and potential candidates could progress towards EU membership, each in accordance with its merits.
Enlargement has been one of the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency. In her capacity as chair of the GAC on enlargement issues, Dr. Marcoullis visited the candidate and potential candidates of the Western Balkans, and Iceland, to send a strong message of encouragement for a swift process of reforms.
