Integrated Maritime Policy

“Reenergizing” the EU Integrated Maritime Policy… from Lisbon to Limassol

Cyprus, being an island maritime state, realizes the potentials of Europe’s oceans and seas for the EU economy, sustainability and prosperity as well as the need for a genuine strategic approach to Europe’s maritime affairs and coastal areas. In this regard, the EU Integrated Maritime Policy (IMP) is an important tool in maximizing the sustainable development, economic growth and social cohesion of Member States and in meeting the objectives of Europe 2020 Strategy.

The EU-IMP forms a part of the strategic priorities of the Cyprus Presidency. This priority will be highlighted through an Informal Ministerial Meeting on EU-IMP to be organised in Cyprus. This Meeting will be a follow-up to the one organized by the Portuguese Presidency in Lisbon, in October 2007. The Ministerial Meeting will take place both in Nicosia and Limassol, on 8 October 2012 and it will be addressed by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias and the President of the European Commission Mr. Jose Manuel Barroso.

The Ministerial Meeting will aim at “Re-energizing” the IMP through the examination and adoption of a political Declaration (the “Limassol Declaration”) which will become the milestone for a new drive for the further development and implementation of this innovative cross-cutting policy.
