Undoubtedly, the recent discoveries of large quantities of natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea and the increasing related offshore activities, call for the establishment of energy cooperation between the EU and third countries in the region. In this context, the Cyprus Presidency and the European Commission will co-organize a Meeting, at a ministerial level, between the EU and the countries in the South-Eastern Mediterranean region. The meeting will be held on the 12th-13th of December 2012 and it will aim to establish a common understanding regarding the future orientations and cooperation priorities in the region. Specifically, the meeting will focus to the safety of offshore oil and gas activities as well as to the issues related to gas infrastructures and interconnections and the formation of a common energy market.
