Key issues related to preparing EU forests for future challenges and opportunities, are on the agenda of the EU Forest Directors General Meeting. Some of these are the state of play of the negotiations for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe, the ex-post evaluation of the EU Forest Action Plan, the development of the new EU Forest Strategy and the evaluation of Forestry Measures of Rural Development Programmes. The meeting will take place in Pafos on November 12 and 13.
During the meeting, participants will be informed about the state of play of the negotiations for a Legally Binding Agreement on Forests in Europe and the outcome of the discussions at the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC). The Committee was established by the ministers responsible for forests in order to develop a holistic legally binding framework agreement. They will also discuss and further develop positions on the remaining key aspects, such as on placing the agreement under the umbrella of the United Nations, as well as issues of finance and compliance.
At the meeting, the outcome of the evaluation of the EU Forest Action Plan, which is implemented from 2007 till the end of the year, will also be discussed, as well as the further steps for the development of the new EU Forest Strategy. Furthermore, the Directors- General will exchange views on problems and good examples regarding the implementation of forestry measures under the Rural Development Programmes and will discuss the new draft Rural Development Regulation.
During the second day of the meeting, the Forest Directors will have the opportunity to participate to an excursion to Troodos Forest, familiarise themselves with forestry in Cyprus and celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Common Agricultural Policy by planting 50 trees.
