Press release – Negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Singapore finalised
20.12.2012, 11:04 (CET)
On December 16, the Commission announced that negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the European Union and Singapore had been finalised. Following the announcement, the Council, at the level of Trade Policy Committee (Full Members), yesterday December 19 gave the agreement its preliminary support, awaiting detailed documentation on the various issues contained in the agreement.

Negotiations between the EU and Singapore on a free trade agreement started in March 2010. The EU-Singapore FTA will be the EU's second ambitious agreement with a key Asian trading partner, after the EU-Korea FTA, which is in operation since July 2011 and the EU's first agreement with a member of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The draft agreement is expected to be initialed in spring 2013.
