Press Release - Cohesion Policy: Interim Agreement with the European Parliament on the programming of funds
19.12.2012, 17:36 (CET)
Member States and EU regions now have certainty on the way forward concerning their preparations for the new programmes to be financed by the relevant Union funds for the period 2014-2020. Following intensive negotiations with the European Parliament, the Cyprus Presidency succeeded in obtaining an interim political agreement among the two institutions on all programming issues. This interim agreement was endorsed today, December 19, by the Committee of Permanent Representatives (COREPER) II.

An important  aspect of this agreement is the new name for the five European Funds: ‘European Structural and Investment Funds’, which will work together under a common framework for the achievement of sustainable and inclusive growth of the Union in 2014-2020. The five European Funds are as follows:

  1. European regional development fund
  2. European social fund
  3. Cohesion fund
  4. European agricultural fund for rural development
  5. European maritime and fisheries fund

Under this framework Member States and regions will need to prepare their new programmes well ahead of 2014, as they will be reflected in the so-called ‘Partnership Agreement’; a national strategic document that will set the main priorities and objectives for the new programming period.

Member States declared their intention to actively involve all relevant partners such as regional and local authorities, NGOs and social partners throughout this preparatory stage.
