Press Release – Important Days for Cohesion Policy
04.10.2012, 17:02 (CET)
Cohesion Policy should aim to bring out the competitive advantage of each European region and it constitutes “the most practical demonstration of European solidarity” according to Cyprus Deputy Minister, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis. The Deputy Minister was speaking today before the 40th Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions of Europe (CPMR), which was held in Bialystok, Poland.

During his intervention at the CPMR, Ambassador Mavroyiannis stressed the significance of Cohesion Policy as a force of European solidarity and informed the Conference that the upcoming General Affairs Council meeting on October 16 will seek to achieve a partial general approach on important elements of the policy.

“Cohesion Policy aims to reduce significant economic, social and territorial disparities that still exist between Europe’s regions and Member States,” stressed the Cypriot Deputy Minister, while highlighting the need to work to each region’s strengths.

The session about Cohesion Policy was opened by the President of the CPMR, Mr. Jean – Yves Le Drian, while the European Commissioner for Regional Policy, Mr. Johannes Hahn, and the Member of the Committee of the Regions, Mr. Marek Wozniak, also intervened.

Ambassador Mavroyiannis is set to participate as an observer tomorrow, October 5, at a heads of government meeting of EU Member States associated with the informal group of Friends of Cohesion, plus Croatia that will be held in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Participants in this meeting include the Presidents of the European Parliament and Commission, Mr. Martin Schulz and Mr. José Manuel Barroso respectively, while the Vice-President of the European Commission, Mr. Maroš Šefčovič and the Commissioner responsible for financial programming and budget, Mr. Janusz Lewandowski, will also take part at the meeting.
