Mr Stefanos Stefanou assumed office as Government Spokesman on 3 March 2008.

He previously served as special advisor at the Office of the President of the House of Representatives, Mr Demetris Christofias. He held that post until his appointment as Government Spokesman on 29 February 2008, following the election of Mr Christofias as President of Cyprus on 24 February 2008.

Mr Stefanou studied at the Academy of Social Sciences and Social Administration in Sofia, Bulgaria (1984-1989) and holds a degree in Political Science. During his studies he was actively involved in the student movement and served as President of the Student Association of Cypriots in Bulgaria.

After completing his studies in 1989, he worked for the United Democratic Youth Organisation (EDON) as Chief Editor of the Organisation’s newspaper “Neolaia” (Youth). In 1996 he was elected General Secretary of EDON, a post he held until November 2001.

As both a high school and university student he was involved in the Left Party Youth Movement, at first as a member of the Pancyprian United Students Organisation (PEOM) and later on as a member of the United Democratic Youth Organisation (EDON). During his studies, he also served as a member of the Pancyprian Federation of Students and Young Scientists (POFNE).

He played football for four years for the youth team of the First Division club “Omonoia” of Nicosia. He also participated in international football matches as a member of the Cyprus National Youth Team.

He completed his military service in the 32nd Special Forces Squadron of the National Guard.

Mr Stefanou was born on 21 January 1965 in Yerolakkos where he lived until 1974, when the village was occupied by Turkish armed forces following the military invasion of Cyprus by Turkey. He spent his adolescence in the village of Pano Deftera, where his father comes from, and since 1995 he resides in the municipality of Yeri.

He is married to Georgia Zenonos, an educator, and they have two daughters, Danae and Nefeli.
