Dr Titos Christofides assumed office as Under Secretary to the President on 29 February 2008.

On 1 August 2003 Dr Christofides was appointed President of the Cyprus Sports Organisation, a post to which he was reappointed in 2006 and served until his appointment to the government.

He studied medicine in Moscow and in 1969 he was appointed general practitioner by the Public Service Commission.

He worked as a general practitioner and later in the Ophthalmology Department in the Nicosia General Hospital, in Limassol and in Larnaka.

In 1976 he was granted a scholarship by the Council of Europe to pursue further studies in London. He graduated from the London Royal School of Medicine with a speciality in Ophthalmology and became the Director of the Ophthalmology Department at the Larnaka Hospital.

Dr Christofides was President of the Cyprus Ophthalmological Society for four years.

He has also served on the Council of the Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation and on the Journalists Ethics Committee. He was also a member of the Council of the Doctors Trade Union for many years.

He was President of the Larnaka Federation of Secondary Education Pupils’ Parents and was the Treasurer of the Pancyprian Confederation of Secondary Education Pupils’ Parents.

Dr Christofides participates actively in the cultural field and pioneered the setting up of the Larnaka district professional theatre club, SKALA, chaired by the Larnaka Mayor. He has offered his services to the SKALA theatre club, which has been subsidized by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation, since its establishment, in his capacity as Deputy President.

Dr Christofides collaborated for many years on a weekly basis with a local daily newspaper contributing a personal column, writing articles of a cultural and social interest. He has also published two collections of poems: PROSMONI and ASKARDAMIKTI.

He pioneered with others the setting up in Larnaka of the Cultural Organisation ANAZITISI of which he has been President since its establishment. He actively participates in the Cyprus sports administration societies and was member of the Cyprus Football Federation’s Council for many years. He served as President of the Larnaka Sport Club ALKI for five years.

He has attended professional training seminars and participated in European and international fora and in local conferences in his field of expertise.

As a high school graduate, he participated in a Limassol Municipality literature contest in honour of the writer Nicos Nicolaides and was awarded third prize.

Dr Christofides was born in Limassol on 1 August 1944.

He is married to Vera Christodoulides and they have two children and four grandchildren.
