Press Release - EU and Greenland signed agreement on fishing opportunities
18.09.2012, 14:22 (CET)
The Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Cyprus to the EU Ambassador George Zodiates signed on 18 September 2012 at an official ceremony in Brussels, the Protocol setting out the fishing opportunities and financial contribution provided for in the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between the European Community and Greenland.

The New Protocol sets out the EU fishing possibilities in the waters of Greenland for the period 2013-2015 as well as the relevant conditions for the fisheries including the financial contribution to Greenland.   The current protocol which entered into force from 1 January 2007 will expire on 21 December 2012.  The new one should be applied provisionally from 1 January 2013.

The New Protocol to the Fisheries Partnership Agreement is based on scientific advice with the objective to promote sustainable and responsible fishing activities.  Compared to the fisheries protocol in force, the new agreement reduces EU fishing possibilities, e.g. for redfish, Greenland halibut, cod and prawn in West Greenland while the EU quotas for capelin and prawns in East Greenland are increased.

Beside the support for the sectoral programme and a financial reserve of 1.5 million Euros for additional fishing opportunities, Greenland will receive an annual payment of 17.8 million Euros from the EU.
