Press Release – Cyprus’ Deputy Minister for EU Affairs represented the EU at the European Economic Area Council

The Deputy Minister for EU Affairs, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis today represented the EU at the 38th European Economic Area (EEA) Council, on behalf of the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Baroness Catherine Ashton.

The three EEA EFTA members were represented by their respective Foreign Affairs Ministers, Mr. Espen Barth Eide for Norway, Mr. Össur Skarphéðinsson for Iceland and Dr. Aurelia Frick for Liechtenstein.

The EEA Council’s main issues of discussion were the operation of the EEA Agreement, which was deemed to be working at a satisfactory level; albeit some issues exists which need to be resolved.

An orientation debate also took place concerning trade and the relevant rules that dictate the cooperation with countries of the Western Balkans and of the EU’s Eastern and Southern Neighbourhood. The EEA Council’s conclusions were also adopted.

In the framework of the EEA Council, a political dialogue took place during which participants exchanged views on the Middle East peace process, Iran’s nuclear programme and the situation in Syria and Myanmar.

In the margins of the EEA Council, the Deputy Minister met the Foreign Affairs Minister of Liechtenstein, Dr. Aurelia Frick, with whom he discussed, not only the bilateral relations, but also issues relating to the European Economic Area and the current economic crisis.
