Press Release - Climate Change experts prepared the EU positions in international negotiations
06.07.2012, 14:29 (CET)
The meeting of EU experts on Climate Change was organized by the Cyprus Presidency (Department of Environment), on 5-6 July in Pafos.

This meeting brought together members of the Working Group of the EU Council on International Environmental Issues on Climate Change. The meeting was attended by delegations from the EU Member States and the European Commission.

At the meeting, current and imminent activities and challenges for EU international negotiations in the area of climate change were discussed, particularly the forthcoming international negotiations in Bangkok (September 2012) and Doha (November 2012) and the need to identify key priorities for the EU on the status of commitments after 2020.

In both negotiations, Cyprus will lead the EU countries.

During the meeting, agreement was reached on the programme for the appropriate preparation for the meetings and the issues that the EU should work on in the next six months for better results in the international negotiations, including the Council conclusions to be adopted next October.

On the international finance of climate change, discussions focused on ensuring the needs for short-term finance and emphasized the relationship between funding of other countries and the taking of effective measures to mitigate climate change. It was also agreed that further discussions are needed on the funding for the period 2013-2020 and on the longer-term contribution to the international efforts to tackle climate change.
