Press Release - Adoption of conclusions for the safeguarding of Europe’s waters expected
14.12.2012, 13:36 (CET)
On Monday December 17, the European Union’s Environment and Climate Change Ministers will convene in Brussels, to discuss important issues such as the Blueprint to safeguard Europe's Water Resources.

Cyprus’ Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, Mr. Sofoclis Aletraris, will chair the meeting, the final for the environment under the Cyprus Presidency.

The main items on the agenda for Monday’s Environment Council are the Water Blueprint, the Annual Growth Survey for 2013 and the proposed 7th Environment Action Programme.

For the Water Blueprint, a document to safeguard Europe’s water resources that is considered as one of the key environmental issues, the Presidency aims for the Council to adopt relevant Conclusions. On the Annual Growth Survey for 2013, the main goal is to make a “green” European Semester, through an appropriate contribution of the Environment Council to the March 2013 European Council, while the target for the proposed 7th Environment Action Programme, is to initiate the exchange of views on the basic components of the proposal.

During the meeting, the Council will also be informed on the current state of things on a number of dossiers advanced by the Presidency, such as on the LIFE programme, CO2 emissions from new vehicles, greenhouse gas emissions and removals resulting from activities related to land use, land use change and forestry, the outcome of the 18th Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change and a number of EU Emissions Trading System (ETS)- related issues.

On Sunday night, prior to the ministerial meeting, Mr. Aletraris will co- chair the traditional meeting with the Green- 10 organisations, which will provide an opportunity for ministers as well as Commissioners to engage in dialogue with the environmental community on issues to be discussed at the Council.
