Press Release - Cyprus’ Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers to participate at Foreign Affairs Council and FAC/Defence meeting

Cyprus' Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis and Minister of Defence Mr. Demetris Eliades, will participate in the upcoming Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) and FAC/Defence Ministers meeting, to be held in Brussels on November 19. The meeting will be chaired by the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Catherine Ashton (HR).

Ministers of Defence will meet in the morning, under the chairmanship of the HR, in the format of the European Defence Agency steering board, to discuss the issue of pooling and sharing of resources. During the subsequent FAC/Defence Ministers meeting, discussions will focus on the issues of capability development and CSDP Operations.

At a joint lunch, the Foreign Affairs and Defence Ministers will examine the situation in Mali, and discuss preparations for a possible EU military operation for the training of the Malian defence forces. They will also hold an orientation debate, in view of the European Council of December 2013 which will be dedicated to defence issues.

Latest developments in EU’s Southern Neighbourhood

During the FAC meeting which will take place after lunch, the Ministers of Foreign Affairs will deliberate on the latest developments in the EU’s southern neighbourhood, in particular the situation in Syria and international efforts for a diplomatic solution of the crisis.

The HR will also debrief Ministers on the results of the EU-Egypt Task Force meeting which took place in Cairo on November 14. Discussions will also focus on Libya and the Middle East Peace Process. Ministers will also discuss the situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in post-elections Ukraine and exchange views on the EU’s relations with Cuba. A short exchange of views is also expected to take place on the aftermath of the US elections.  

Council Conclusions are expected to be adopted on Syria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mali, Yemen and Lebanon, among other issues.
