Press Release - Nine ministers in the European Parliament this week
09.07.2012, 12:44 (CET)
From today a total of nine Cyprus ministers will be giving 23 presentations in 16 different European Parliament committees until Thursday. The presentations will be webcast live on the website of the European Parliament. You can find links to the presentations below.

Following the presentation of the Cyprus Presidency’s main priorities by President Demetris Christofias at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg on July 4, ministers of the Cyprus government will outline the priorities in their related fields and will be on hand to answer questions from MEPs.

The presentations start today, with the Minister of Health Mr. Stavros Malas and the Minister of Justice and Public Order Mr. Loucas Louca appearing before the committees of Environment, Public Health and Food Safety and Legal Affairs respectively.

Fourteen presentations will take place on Tuesday, July 10, and another five on Wednesday, while the final presentation will take place at the Industry, Research and Energy Committee, where the Health Minister, responsible for the research portfolio, will present the Presidency priorities on the issue.

Among others, emphasis will be given to issues such as energy policy, the sustainable management of resources, the EU Integrated Maritime Policy, a new enhanced framework of economic governance, the monitoring of the implementation of the Europe 2020 Strategy and the deepening of the internal market.

The Cypriot ministers aim to hold a constructive dialogue with the Members of the European Parliament on the aforementioned issues; as well as on the Common European Asylum System, issues related to health and children’s well-being, education and culture, the southern dimension of the European Neighbourhood Policy, food security and a strengthened EU external trade policy.

Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis will appear before the Regional Development and Constitutional Affairs committees on Thursday, while he will also present the Cyprus Presidency priorities to the European Economic and Social Committee, on Wednesday and to the Committee of the Regions on July 18.

Finance Minister, Mr. Vassos Shiarly, gave his presentation to the Economic and Monetary Affairs committee on July 2, as this week he will be chairing the ECOFIN meeting on Tuesday, July 10.
