Press Release - President Christofias met with the Prime Minister of Denmark

President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Demetris Christofias and Prime Minister of Denmark Mrs Helle Thorning Schmidt today discussed issues relating to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU as well as the legislative dossiers Cyprus has inherited from the Danish Presidency.

President Christofias met today, at the Presidential Palace, in Lefkosia (Nicosia), with Danish Prime Minister Thorning Schmidt, who is visiting Cyprus on the occasion of the official ceremony for the Cyprus Presidency that will take place tonight.

In statements to the Press after their meeting President Christofias underlined the close cooperation between Cyprus and Denmark, adding that the experiences of the Danish Presidency hold great significance for Cyprus.

“The close cooperation with Denmark and Poland in the context of the Trio-Presidency will continue, since we have inherited several legislative dossiers,” said President Christofias.

The President added that he was briefed by the Prime Minister thoroughly on the most important issues and legislative dossiers that the Cyprus Presidency has inherited from the Danish Presidency.

Referring to the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency, President Christofias noted that these involve more effective policies for more solidarity, for a better Europe with economic growth and social cohesion.

President Christofias and Prime Minister Thorning Schmidt also exchanged views on the current negotiations on the Multinational Financial Framework for the period 2014-2020, for  which the final phase of negotiations is expected will be reached towards the end of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council.

“There is need for an EU budget that will support growth, boost competitiveness of the European economy, strengthen small businesses and enhance employment opportunities,” said President Christofias, adding that one of the most important objectives of the Cyprus Presidency is ensuring social cohesion.

The Prime Minister of Denmark said that Cyprus can count on the full support of Denmark, pointing out that the priorities of the Cyprus Presidency are timely and what Europe currently needs.

Prime Minister Thorning Schmidt expressed belief that the Cyprus Presidency will be a success, noting the personal commitment of President Christofias to this task.

Replying to a question on what were the lessons learnt during Denmark’s Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Prime Minister of Denmark said that even though the EU is experiencing a very severe economic crisis, it is possible to get tangible results to the benefit of European citizens as it is possible for the EU institutions to work together to deliver concrete results.
