Press Release - President Christofias met with Baroness Ashton

The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr Demetris Christofias met today, at the Presidential Palace, with the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Baroness Catherine Ashton.

During their meeting they discussed the developments in the region, as well as the coordination between the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union with the High Representative and the European External Action Service, which has the competency to promote the foreign relations of the Union, to achieve and solidify peace and stability in the region, as well as to deal with emergency situations that may arise.

President Christofias expressed readiness on the part of the Republic of Cyprus to support the efforts and initiatives of the High Representative by utilising its friendly relations with countries in the region.

Baroness Aston thanked Cyprus for its readiness to contribute and characterised the assistance that Cyprus can offer as the Presiding state of the Council of the EU as very important in promoting the foreign policy of the European Union in the region, but also in strengthening the role of the EU in the world.
