Mrs Eleni Mavrou assumed office as Minister of Interior on 20 March 2012.

She was elected Mayor of Lefkosia (Nicosia), the capital of Cyprus, in the 17 December 2006 municipal elections.  She served a full five-year term until 31 December 2011.

In 2001 she was elected member of the House of Representatives for the Nicosia Constituency and was reelected in 2006. She served as President of the House Committee on the Environment and a member of the Parliamentary Committees on Internal Affairs, European Affairs and Human Rights.

She served as member of the Convention on the Future of Europe, and in 2003 she was appointed by the House of Representatives as an observer to the European Parliament until 2004.

She also served as a Member of the Nicosia Municipal Council for two consecutive terms from 1986 to 1996.

Mrs Mavrou was awarded the Decoration of Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour of the French Republic, and the Grand Decoration of Honour in Silver with Sash for Services to the Republic of Austria.

She studied Civil Engineering at the Higher Technical Institute, in Cyprus, and subsequently Politics and International Relations at the University of London. In the course of her studies she was actively involved in the student movement and later on in the youth movement in Cyprus.

Eleni Mavrou was born in 1961 in the town of Keryneia (Kyrenia), which has been under Turkish military occupation since the 1974 military invasion of the Republic of Cyprus by Turkey. Since 1974, she has been living in Nicosia.
