Dr George Demosthenous assumed office as Minister of Education and Culture on 5 August 2011.

Prior to his appointment as Minister, Mr Demosthenous served as Vice-Rector and Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering of Frederick University in Cyprus. At the time of the establishment of Frederick University he was Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department.

As Vice-Rector of Frederick University he was responsible for the development, operation and evaluation of all new undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes of study. He was also responsible for the programme review and re-evaluation of all programmes of study of the University and collaborated with the University’s Internal Quality Assurance Committee on matters relating to teaching evaluation of the academic staff and the advancement of effective teaching methods and technologies. He was systematically involved with issues pertaining to quality assurance in higher education and chaired the Committees of the Senate, Studies and Student Welfare, Research, Administration and Staff, and Public and International Relations. He was also a member of the Committee of Planning and Development of the University Council and the coordinator for the University of the “Development and Operation of Enterprise Liaison Offices in Universities Operating in the Republic of Cyprus” project.

His research interests focused mainly on subjects related to Manufacturing Processes and Engineering Design. He was systematically involved, at a research level, with the experimental and numerical analysis for the design of new road guardrail systems and automotive-guardrail crashworthiness. Recently, he was actively involved in research in the field of Learning in Natural Sciences and Engineering. He participated as a project coordinator and scientific coordinator in a large number of research projects funded by the Research Promotion Foundation and the European Union. From his research work a large number of publications have been published in international scientific journals and conferences. He is also the co-author of two scientific books.

Moreover, Mr Demosthenous served as President of the Governing Board of the Foundation for the Management of the European Lifelong Learning Programmes and a member of the Cyprus Scientific Council.

During the period 2006-2010, he represented Cyprus in the “Committee for Materials, Physics and Nanotechnologies” of the COST EU programme. He has also participated in various scientific and organising committees of national and international conferences.

Dr Demosthenous obtained the Diploma of Mechanical Engineering (Dipl.-Eng) and a Doctorate Diploma (PhD) from the National Technical University of Athens. Throughout his studies he was supported by scholarships provided by the Republic of Cyprus and the State Scholarships Foundation of Greece, and was the recipient of numerous distinctions and awards. He is a member of the Technical Chamber of Cyprus and other international scientific societies including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Institution of Mechanical Engineers of UK (ImechE), the Society of Manufacturing Engineering (SME), and the Society of Automotive Engineering (SAE).

George Demosthenous was born on 29 September 1964 in the village of Pano Zodia, which has been under military occupation by Turkey since 1974. He is married and has one son.
