Press Release - EU Defence Ministers to discuss the CSDP’s state of play
25.09.2012, 15:01 (CET)
Developments in the EU’s southern neighbourhood, the current state of Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) operations and missions as well as future EU military capabilities will form the basis of EU Defence Ministers discussions during their two-day Informal Meeting in Cyprus on September 26 and 27.

The Informal Meeting is expected to provide a useful platform for ministers to be briefed on the plans of the European External Action Service (EEAS) and to exchange views on current aspects of the CSDP. The Cypriot Defence Minister, Mr. Demetris Eliades will chair the meeting on behalf of the High Representative Baroness Catherine Ashton.

EU Southern Neighbourhood

The first day of the meeting will be devoted to the recent developments in the southern neighbourhood of the EU. Ministers will examine the security developments of the area, including Libya and the Sahel (Mali).

Discussions of the second day will focus on the state of play of current CSDP operations and missions, including those of ALTHEA, ATALANTA, EUTM Somalia and EUCAP – Nestor, with ministers set to be briefed by the relevant operation and mission commanders. These discussions carry notable significance due to the activity of piracy in the Horn of Africa region.

Future cooperation

Ministers will also discuss the development of EU military capabilities, primarily through pooling and sharing, in an effort to develop a more structured, long term approach. A relevant document prepared by the European Defence Agency will form the basis of the discussions.

Finally, ministers will look to assess the outcome of the Battlegroups coordination conference and to explore ways of developing a more systemic approach to filling the Battlegroups roster.
