Press Release – Deputy Minister at ‘The Parliament’ Magazine’s Cyprus Presidency Reception

The Deputy Minister to the President for European Affairs, Ambassador Andreas D. Mavroyiannis and two Cypriot Members of the European Parliament, Mr. Ioannis Kasoulides and Mr. Takis Hadjigeorgiou opened the Cyprus Presidency Reception of the 'The Parliament' magazine today in Brussels. The reception was also hosted by the two Cypriot MEPs.

The Cypriot Deputy Minister expressed his gratitude for the support of the Members of the European Parliament and he also stressed the importance of close cooperation between the Cyprus Presidency and the Parliament. Ambassador Mavroyiannis also welcomed the recent decision of the Conference of Presidents to resume the negotiations on the five dossiers in the field of JHA, which is, as he mentioned, “a positive step for future cooperation between the two institutions and for moving forward important work in this field”.

Commitment for a Better Europe

Moreover, Ambassador Mavroyiannis stated that the Cyprus Presidency is committed to work towards a Better Europe, by promoting decisions focused on making Europe a better place, based on the values of solidarity, equality, pluralism, freedom and justice. The Cypriot Deputy Minister continued by stating some of the most important issues the Cyprus Presidency is engaged to deal with during the second half of 2012 and he stressed the importance of securing an agreement on the new Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

The Cypriot Ambassador also referred to the recent Report of the Economic and Monetary Union of the EU and the opportunity provided to create a stronger economic and monetary union, as well referring to the single market as an important element for growth. In addition, he stated that another goal of the Cyprus Presidency is to achieve the establishment of the Common European Asylum System.

Concluding, Ambassador Mavroyiannis repeated that the Cyprus Presidency acts as an honest broker, with a vision for Europe to create a ‘filoxenos topos’, a hospitable space.

The event was attended by more than 300 people, among which was Commissioner Vassiliou, EU officials and representatives of interest groups.
