Press release - President Christofias participates in the last European Council during the Cyprus Presidency
12.12.2012, 12:54 (CET)
The President of the Republic of Cyprus Mr. Demetris Christofias will participate on 13-14 December in the last meeting of the EU Heads of State and Government during Cyprus’ six-month Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The main agenda item at the summit is the next steps for the completion of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). A report was published on 5 December by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, in close collaboration with the Presidents of the Commission, the Eurogroup and the European Central Bank. This report incorporates valuable input from the Commission's "blueprint" as well as from the European Parliament debates.

On the basis of this report, the European Council will determine the next steps required to complete the EMU as part of a comprehensive and three-staged process (short-term, medium-term and long-term). At the heart of the short-term targets is to break the link between banks and sovereign debt.

President Christofias stated:

“I am looking forward to the December meeting of the European Council, which is the last summit during the Cyprus Presidency. The first Cyprus Presidency of the Council had set as its main objective to work for a Better Europe, first and foremost for the European citizens. Stabilizing the Eurozone and bridging its gaps will eventually create conducive conditions for economic growth in Europe, prosperity and social cohesion. All together, we must vigorously strive towards a Better Europe”.
