16.10.2012, 09:22 (CET)
The Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment of Cyprus, Mr. Sofoclis Aletraris, will represent the EU, as chair of the Environment Council in the 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention for the Protection on Biological Diversity. The Conference  started in Hyderabad, India, on October 8, and will conclude with a ministerial meeting between October 16-19.

The 11th Meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention for the Protection on Biological Diversity will examine many issues. Some of the most important issues are:

  • review of the progress so far for the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Biodiversity (2011-202) and decisions to provide further momentum;
  • adoption of targets for the mobilization of financial and other resources to facilitate the achievement of the 20 Biodiversity Targets of the Plan;
  • assessment of the status of biodiversity in the world’s oceans in light of various threats to marine biodiversity;
  • measures to support the restoration of up to 15% of degraded ecosystems, in the context of climate change and food security;
  • the way forward for the entry into force of the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing to genetic resources;
  • Commitments by local governments and island states to the implementation of the Strategic Plan and the support of island biodiversity, respectively.

The Cyprus Presidency hopes that all contracting parties of the convention will reach an agreement on the issue of transferring economic resources to developing countries, in order to begin the implementation of the goals for the protection of biodiversity, which were agreed in a previous meeting in 2010.

Over 160 countries will participate at the Conference.
