Press Release - European Development Days 2012: Eradication of hunger a priority
16.10.2012, 11:34 (CET)
Additional measures are necessary in the fight to eradicate hunger across the world, emphasised the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias, during his speech at the opening ceremony of the European Development Days 2012 forum in Brussels. This year the forum is organized in support of inclusive and sustainable growth for human development, and it evolves around three topics: ensuring universal food security, empowering people for inclusive growth and engaging the private sector for development.

At the opening ceremony President Christofias was joined by Presidents of the European Commission José Manuel Barroso, of Benin Dr Thomas Boni Yayi, of Mozambique Armando Emílio Guebuza, of the Republic of Senegal Macky Sall and of Mauritania, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz.

“The daily struggles for survival and the basic needs of the disadvantaged and vulnerable fellow human beings should be our first priority” said the President in his opening remarks, underlining that “inclusive, pro-poor growth and social safety nets do not come about automatically”. “Unless we take additional measures, then hunger will remain the major global challenge, the world’s Achilles Heel”, added President Christofias, calling for the European Development Days to become the landmark to push the fight against hunger amongst the top priorities of the world’s development agenda, now and after 2015.

The President reiterated that development cooperation policy, with emphasis on the eradication of hunger, is one of the Cyprus Presidency’s top priorities, and it will be the core subject of discussion at a high-level international panel event, co-hosted by the Cyprus Presidency and the bicommunal platform of NGOs, CYINDEP, on November 23.
